The objective of this project was to “design for good.” I chose to focus on accessibility in live music events, and how I could design a tool that could make live music more accessible for all attendees. After conducting research about the current state of the industry, I chose to focus on designing an accessibility kit to have at venues during concerts. The goal is to tackle multiple problems with one kit, helping to ensure concerts remain a safe space for everyone.

CONTEXT

CONTEXT

Common issues include inadequate seating arrangements, lack of ramps, and insufficient accessible restrooms.

Without clear details, audience members who have disabilties may hesitate to attend, uncertain if needs will be met.

Rock in Rio incorporated sign language interpreters, enabling deaf attendees to enjoy performances.

Research suggests that providing accommodations like quiet zones can significantly improve the experience for attendees.

Virtual reality (VR) concerts are able to provide immersive experiences for those unable to attend in person.

Coldplay's "Music of the Spheres" tour included sign language interpreters and tactile tours for visually impaired fans.

PROBLEM

PROBLEM

what’s the problem?

More people than ever are going to concerts and other live music events.

In 2023, the global music tour industry brought in $9.17 billion in revenue, a record high.

In the US, 17% of 18-29 year olds and 16% of 30-49 year olds booked tickets for music events in the past 12 months.

In 2023, global ticket sales for music tours reached 70 million, another record high.

TAKEAWAY

TAKEAWAY

what did I want to do and how did I tackle it?

poor crowd management

By streamlining the process, accessibility at live music events will be easier to find. This will make navigation easier for all attendants of live music experiences.

sensory overload experiences

The tools in the kit were designed with intention, tackling auditory, visual, sensory, physical, communication, emergency, and additional impairments at the source.

insufficient staff training

By using a simple and more efficient process to make accessibility easier, staff will be more informed and trained on how to deal with impairment issues.

lack of accommodations

By providing this accessibility kit at live music events, people with any type of impairment will have an easier time experiencing the difficulties with large audiences.
